Talk French To Me: How To Dress Like A French Woman

the-rue-collective-karl-lagerfeld-vogue-9Last week I was busy dreaming up a winter escape to Paris when the new Karl Lagerfeld Paris lookbook landed in my inbox for a shoot with Vogue (I say this casually as if it happens all the time, ha!). My daydreaming inspired my outfit selection, which included a beret and some leopard print loafers.

When it comes to style, no one does it like the French. They always look like they didn’t try, but somehow pull off this effortlessly chic, ‘I just threw it on and look this cool’ outfit.

So what are the ‘rules’?

1. Don’t follow the trends. Keep it simple with solid staple pieces – a leather biker jacket, a casual white tee, skinny jeans, a red lip.

2. Investment pieces. Build your closet with timeless investment pieces that you can pair back with the above – a printed silk scarf, a leather quilted crossbody, statement shoes…

3. Bed head. Roll with it.

4. Keep it neutral. All black, creams, earth tones, basics…and buy a striped t-shirt.

5. Slouchy is good.

the-rue-collective-3If you’ve recently spent any time roaming around for fall essentials (or on Instagram, while we’re at it), chances are you’ve seen a pattern –literally and figuratively. As it is the case with every season, there’s always that one trend that seems to be the golden thread through all shops and brands. By now it’s pretty clear that this Fall, grey plaid (and especially gray plaid suits) are taking over the reigns. Checks and gingham first made appearances during runway season earlier this year, and with my unwavering love for all things Alexander Wang, you best believe I was sold on the spot. Be it oversized and boxy cuts or form-fitted suits, almost every major label incorporated the trend, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that high-street labels jumped on the bandwagon.

Blazers, coats, pants and skirts – the infatuation is real. And if you’re anything like me, you want them all and you want them now. Lucky for you, I did some scouting for all of us and rounded up my favorite pieces to wear this fall:

I’ve said it before, and here we go again: I’m really not a fan of summer dressing. Not because of the weather, simply because I don’t love the clothes. Give me layers and outerwear any day. One of my biggest struggles is picking the right footwear. I rarely find sandals I like, and would rather strap into boots 12 months a year if temperatures permitting (or not).

With that in mind you can imagine my excitement to finally be stocking up on fall pieces and transitioning my wardrobe into the cooler seasons. My fall style is built around my two favorite items to buy: boots and coats. Since I’m a fanatic when it comes to both, I tend to invest in high quality staple pieces and style the rest of my outfits around them – case and point, my Gucci booties, joining the footwear fam straight from Luisaviaroma.

Though NYC weather is still in post-summer heatwave/PSL season limbo, my boot collection is in full rotation.

NYFW Diary: Day 3

Day three was a light one. I only went to one show, a Chinese designer Taoray Wang, whom I’d never heard of before – which I like.

The show as a whole was an interesting experience for me. Weeks back I actually met Susan Shin who’s PR agency was putting it on. We were at a dinner with mutual friends and got to talking. Fast forward to fashion week and there I am sitting in prime runway real estate, next to … I’ll use the term celebrities here … though I had no idea who they were. They had statement sunnies and body guards and the press were falling over them. Guaranteed I’m photo bombing half those shots like a deer in the headlights, with my three-day old hair and track pants from last season.

Anywho… thoughts on the clothing (cause that’s what we’re all there for right?!??) Half of it I was into. The other half had bows. The belts were a highlight for me. Actually, do we call these belts? Waists cinchers? Whatever they are, I want one.

After the show I went home, laid on my couch and ordered Poke rice paper rolls, because I’m over poke bowls, and you know … my horizons are broad.

NYFW Diary: Day 2

Day 2 I channelled big bird. And ran into Tess who coincidentally was feeling the lemon pallet too.

I watched my favourite show of the week this day – GCDS – literally wanted to follow the models back stage and peel the clothes right off of them. This is what a love about fashion week, falling in love with a designer ‘court’ side. Have a look at this snippet from the show and see what you think.

After the show I went to Banter and ate this. Then I strolled on over to Concept Korea, popped into the Milly presentation and landed at the WWD x Samsung Party. I drank two glasses of Sav Blanc and made the very important decision to ditch my evening events for pasta.

A bowl of spaghetti and scallops later I was once again, in bed. Party – Animal.
